Book Review: If you want to learn how to play ...

It seems unfortunate that much of the "reviews" of this book are focusing on semantics of the background essay material provided in 101 Montunos. I say unfortunate because these arguments overshadow the fact that book is excellent for introducing the pianist to montunos!
I've found it very helpful for learning patterns applicable to son, guaracha, bomba, plena, merengue, cha cha cha, 6/8, and more, plus the relation of the patterns to clave and how to vary patterns "properly" based on clave! To me, and many musicians I'm sure, this is what counts when buying a book focused on PLAYING music. I find the book easy to follow and logical in presentation of how these patterns evolved from early son to other styles (and yes, the author DOES mention that the word "salsa" is steeped in controversy, if that is important in establishing credibility ... you wouldn't know this from the other reviews posted here). The audio clips found on the two included CDs are a bit short but they do the job to give a sense of the patterns as notated in the book.
Keep in mind that the author of this book has played with and arranged for some of the greats: Tito Puente, Cachao, Giovanni Hidalgo ... whatever anyone else has to say about how background information is presented, they can't argue with Mauleon's experience. As I said before, you want to learn how to play this style, this book WORKS. I recommend it if you want a practical guide to learning Latin piano patterns, and want to get playing!
