Book Reviews of 1776

Book Review: A Tremendous Job of Researching
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a heckuva well researched book. In terms of content, it can't be beat. The writing tends to be a bit uneven at times, with sentences that seem to lack flow and rhythm, but McCullough is first and foremost a historian and not a stylist.

Overall, 1776 deserves high praise.

Book Review: A balanced look at the Revolutionary War
Summary: 4 Stars

1776 was a great book to see what was happening on both sides of the Revolutionary War. Especially useful were the journal entries of the common man/soldier. Reading the book was a pleasure, since it moved fast but gave great details, especially if you like trivia. I kept a map of the East Coast for reference and comparison. I great gift for a history buff.

Book Review: A book that "reads itself"
Summary: 5 Stars

A wonderful account of a time period that seemingly is all-too-forgotten about today. As a college student, I haven't had the time to read leisurely in a long time but I was through with this book in mere days. McCullough's writing style is captivating and exciting; this was like watching a Hollywood movie.

I was highly impressed with this book. The only, small, small, small complaint I had was that it indeed is only about the year "1776." Flipping through McCullough's extensive reference lists in the back of the book tells us all about the imense work this man did to compile this magnificent book. I really hope that he perhaps will compile another book in the style of this one about the next 6.5 years of the Revolutionary War (or War for American Independence, as some call it).

Book Review: A compelling look at early America
Summary: 5 Stars

McCullough does a terrific job humanizing America's founding fathers. He clearly did his homework and did a great job tying in quotes and original sources into the story line. The siege of Boston and the battles fought by George Washington in deadly winter weather are amazing, and show the real character and determination of our early leaders. Great book for history buffs!

Book Review: A different perspective on George Washington
Summary: 5 Stars

Lawyers have to read so much as part of our professional obligations that you would think we would want to get as far away from books in our "off hours" as we could. However, nothing could be further from the truth, at least for this lawyer.

I have read a wonderful historical account about one year of the American Revolution (I am addicted to books on the life and times of our country's history when John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock and Ben Franklin so ably debated our future) and I wanted to share it. David McCullough brings a new and fresh perspective to the American Revolution in "1776 " and makes George Washington come alive, not as a legendary historical figure, but as an ordinary man in an extraordinary job, full of doubt and concern, yet rising to leadership qualities which motivated a deeply-demoralized ragtag army of inexperienced citizen soldiers. McCullough is a master at painting a living picture of a hero, flaws and all ... and when you are done, it seems as though you were there, side-by-side with the hero as ordinary man of his times. It is so eminently readable that you won't want to put it down.
