20th Century Ghosts thrilled me. Joe Hill's short fiction captured my attention like few other stories have done in a while. Hill conjures up an atmosphere of slow terror, making you forget about everything else happening around you until the story is done. After the final word, you relax your grip on the book, take a deep breath, and pull it close again as you flip the page to the next story.
Joe Hill writes about a variety of increasingly bizarre situations, each having their own attractive flavor. "Pop Art" is a coming-of-age tale of two boys, one of whom is short, plastic and inflatable. "Best New Horror" contains a tale within a tale, as the publisher-narrator follows the author of an eerie story into his increasingly disturbing home environment. "My Father's Mask" recounts a young boy's memory of a summer trip with his parents, which becomes a Through the Looking Glass-like fantastic journey. And the rest are just as disturbingly fascinating. I finished the collection hungry for more.
Joe Hill adroitly sets up interesting and creepy plot lines in his short stories that send a pleasant shiver down your spine. He has a bright future ahead of him as an author of horror and speculative fiction. If you enjoy these genres, you'll be glad you read his work.
