Book Reviews of 30 Days of NightBook Review: "Some of the blood-meat tries to escape but there's no way out." Summary: 5 Stars
In places where the sun doesn't rise for weeks on end, madness seems to be a theme amidst the ocean of desolation. All the isolation and the unexplainable mental lesions; so many things plague the minds of man and show how fragile they are. But what happens when something else enters the fray, making the human issues seem small in comparison? What happens when the place itself invites something pathological, but the pathos is in over 19 others that see you and your friends as lambchops? Enter Barrow, Alaska, where a town of almost 500 finds itself plagued by the theft of cellphones, where a stranger wanders in and requests raw hamburger to sate his need for something bloody, and where something horrible is about to happen.
It's such a beautiful thing.
Forget the things you've heard concerning the impact of 30 Days of Night or how much 30 Days changed the minds of readers when it was released. Those words make the story and the artwork sound dated, and 30 Days of Night is anything but that. The story, revolving around vampires attracted to the flicker of darkness lasting for over a month, is beautifully rendered because it works on a number of levels. The archetypes of the characters are not set in stone, and that really works with the vampires and the way they wreak havoc on Barrow. I really liked the vampires and the way they were portrayed; they were terrible and they were monstrous and yet they were seemingly real. I enjoyed that part of the book especially, because monstrous does not equal dull and Niles really understood that and made it sexy. He also managed the piece that revolves around New Orleans as well, and sets up a story arch that lasts for three more books without being forceful.
And then there's the artistic counterpart to the expression, Ben Templesmith.
When graphic novels are examined, the stories have to be beautifully-rendered and the characters have to be memorable but the art - without it, the world no longer turns. Templesmith is one of those forces and that makes the world of Barrow thrive, his minimalist style stripping everything to the core and making you take notice of the focal points truly intended. He also plays with the colors here and the effects there, making gruesome pigments collide with the turmoil of desperation just the right way.
If you've yet to check out 30 Days of Night, you should do so because it is worthwhile. Vampires have been misrepresented for far too long, getting the glossy treatment and wearing too many frilly things. In 30 Days of Night Niles gets back to the basics by remembering the mythical creatures that inspired terror and then adding that modern "more." He also adds in a story that in heavy when you pause and think on it, absorbing the ending and the cost of everything involved.
It really is more than the "revolutionary" or "relevant" added to say the book once meant something to someone.
