Book Review: I knew slow cookers did more than just chilli!

I picked this up in my local library and ordered my own copy before I'd finished it.
This book has recipes for everything you want a slow cooker to do - lamb shanks, risotto, numerous soups and stews and a whole chapter on chillies. But it also has a more adventurous selection, with instructions for pineapple upside down cake, salmon pie, baked potatoes, barbecued pork ribs, cheesecake and winter trail mix among the 300 favourites.
Recipes are clearly laid out, with margin notes containing history and information about the dish, tips on food safety and storage, make-ahead and freezing instructions, and ideas for variations. Not every recipe is pictured but there are colour plates to help visualise the range of cooking styles the slow cooker can achieve.
This book is Canadian, so some of the suggested packet and can sizes are different to those usually available in the UK. However weights and volumes are also given (both metric and imperial). The book also uses terms such as ground beef instead of minced, cilantro instead of coriander, and biscuit topping instead of scone topping. Some of the ingredients listed weren't available in my local supermarket (such as grape jelly and chipolte paste), but were in stock at a larger one nearby. And I haven't managed to track down `liquid smoke' for a barbecue recipe, but I'm sure the internet could provide!
Overall, I've really enjoyed this collection of recipes and ideas, and it has kept my slow cooker in pride of place on the kitchen bench throughout the winter.
