BFI Classics film books are always great fun in a brainy sort of way and DA Miller's newest is a sterling example of that.
Love/hate it, 8 1/2 is still vastly more entertaining than any Iron Man/Ringsy/Frank Miller film on offer these days. So see it, first.
Miller questions longtime rap that Fellini's ("My mother wanted me to become a priest. Instead, I became an adjective") opus is hopelessly self-indulgent and self-referential. Through close examination of the film's famously kaleidoscopic style, Miller suggests that film's alleged boldness isn't, quite. Miller's own style is both witty and learned, although on occasion it can be as baroque as Fellini's famous expository pan through the spa. I like that.
