Book Reviews of A Book of HoursBook Review: Most thought provoking... Summary: 5 Stars
Whether a reader of Merton's writing or not, this book is incredibly beautiful and inspiring in its poetic thought and stunning imagery. Regardless of one's faith base, the calling to internal dialogue and contemplation are compelling. I purchased several for gifts for people of various practices and those with a meditation practice.
His occassional refections which were at the time focused on the Vietnam war and situations happening in our world, again speak volumes in our present world culture. Two weeks after purchase and I have already read it in total X 3.
Book Review: My spiritual guru Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered A Book of Hours and the CD which accompanies it. I am finding it very spiritually enriching and a good way to get back into Merton's contemplative spirit.
Book Review: Not Just for Merton Lovers Summary: 5 Stars
This is a marvelous collection of writings from the works of Thomas Merton, the Trappist Monk, assembled in the form of a book of hours. Even if you are not particularly knowledgable about Merton's writings, you will find his comments on so many aspects of the spiritual life meaningful and tantalizing, you will want to study his works further. The author does include an index that gives the source of each selection included for the particular time and day of the week. Although he lived from 1915 - 1968, you will feel he is writing for right now. Included are writings for Dawn, Day, Dusk and Dark on each day of the week. You might think that only seven days would not be enough to keep you interested. But, as with much of Holy Scripture, something new and fresh appears with repetition. The author includes an informed introduction to her selections for Thomas Merton: A Book of Hours.
Book Review: Not what I expected Summary: 1 Stars
I have used a number of "hours" books, but this one is a far cry from the orthodox use of such a title. I am very disappointed. The poetry it contains is Merton's, but the sense is that someone has used it in a way it was never intended. So both the title and the name Merton feel to me like a scam. The moral to the story is look more carefully before you buy. Names and titles often have more to do with marketing than anything else. I do not recommend this book.
Book Review: Peaceful Creative Discipline Summary: 4 Stars
There is a lot here for the intentional seeker. The days are broken up into Dawn, Day, Dusk, & Dark. To get the full effect of the prayers, do all of the prayers assigned to each day, for both the prayerful effect and the spiritual affect which will bring about good discipline for your personal spiritual growth. And *WARNING* don't read the "Dark" to late, you've got to have a sharp mind to really receive it all.
