Book Review: "Bodice Ripping"? Where? Instead, charming book.
Summary: 5 Stars
What a lovely book. There didn't seem to be any lagging parts, and I learned a lot about the tobacco brides and how difficult it was in Colonial Virginia. This was a fun read, went by fast, integrates religion in a subtle way (not "preachy"), and is "clean."
I do NOT understand the objections some reviewers have had to the descriptions of physical attraction in this book. The couple were *married* and I'm sorry, they may be Christian, but they're not dead! Physical attraction is normal. I don't think the book dwelled on the attraction overmuch, but the storyline was such that both husband and wife (forced into a marriage) are resisting the temptation so that the marriage can be annulled at a later time. The more you know something is "forbidden" to you, the more you want it. LOL.
There was nothing overly objectionable about any of this. The way some reviews carried on, I was expecting an orgy, or at least a full-on description (with "throbbing members" as another reviewer called them LOL) of the sex act. OF COURSE there was nothing like that. It was all handled very discreetly.
If you want your Christian fiction to contain characters who never feel the twinge of physical attraction, then this is not the book for you. But I don't think that acknowledging this reality is such a horrible thing.
Granted, maybe a very sheltered child might not want to read this book (because they'd think all the love and stuff was "icky" anyway), but any adult reader should be able to handle it. It's not a "bodice ripper" by any stretch of the imagination. I think some of the readers here haven't read some of the current "bodice rippers" on the market. YOW! This book is as far away from that as can be imagined.
I also agree with another reviewer who said that Christian fiction seems to be held to a lower standard, in regards to writing quality. I've read a few books by well-reviewed Christian authors and thought, "This is IT? This is supposed to be so great?" Some other much-touted Christian fiction is not all it's cracked up to be. Not so with this book. It's a well-written, polished bit of fiction that can compete nicely with any mainstream romance novel.
