Book Review: A Certain Age hits home

In other reviews people note that Tama Janowitz seems incapable of writing sympathetic characters. I disagree, I was pulling for Florence - there was a hope that the world of status and materialism would fade away as she experienced different situations. Manhattanites, seem to be just as shallow as Chicago's Gold Coasters - an urban life style I could not relate with `til moving to Chicago. The storyline may be fresh, however, I noticed that not a single review mentioned the similarities between this book and Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities. It is a compelling and well written book that is hard to put down. It is a voyeuristic view into the social life of Manhattan's Elite. A person is judged by the price of a handbag, or by the people they claim to know. This book really hits home to someone who has moved to a big city and tried to fit in to the upper class, without really having the means to do so.
