This biology book was published in 1914, as a textbook for high school students. The book's claim to fame is that it was the text book from which John Thomas Scopes (1900-70) taught, sparking the famous "Scopes `Monkey Trial'" of 1925.
As for the book itself, it seems to be a basically good book that includes many illustrations, as well as suggested laboratory experiments. As a modern reader, what I found most interesting about the book is its preaching against the use of alcohol (the 18th Amendment to the American Constitution being a mere five years down the line), and its racist view of the races of man. On page 196 the author says, "...and finally, the highest type of all, the Caucasians, represented by the civilized white inhabitants of Europe and America."
So, if you are looking within this book to find anything that will shed new light on the Scope trial, you will be disappointed. For its time it was probably a good book, but it is now hopelessly out of date. Indeed, because of its stance on race and alcohol, it will probably not even be reprinted as a historically significant book.
Am I glad I read this book? I suppose that I am, because of its historical importance. But, do I recommend the book to anyone else? Not really, there's nothing really significant here, except for what it once was - Exhibit A.
