Book Reviews of A Dangerous Fortune

Book Review: Didn't think I'd like this kind of book, but WOW!
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me preface my review with the following statement. This is not normally my kind of book. Much more at home with a detective murder mystery or enchanting fantasy book, it was by pure luck I decided to read this book.

Without a doubt, this is the best book I've read in years. The author does an excellent job of letting you understand what it was like in the 1800's, without slowing down the plot or tuning into a documentary.

The characters were extremely well fleshed out. The "villians" were indeed bad, but you're left with an understanding and appreciation for them.

Unlike some books where you just know everything will end up okay, this book isn't afraid to make good characters face the fire. I won't give away of the ending except to say it was satisfying and realistic.

Overall, I can't recommend this book enough, especially if it's not the normal genre of book you would read.

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 3 Stars

After reading Pillars of the Earth by Follett, this book is somewhat of a disappointment. Of course why would you try to compare anything with "Pillars?" But nothing Follett does is bad so I would say that it was worth the time I put in reading it.

Book Review: Entertaining but predictable
Summary: 3 Stars

I checked this out of the library as an audio book, and I would say this is a perfect choice for a road trip. I would not have wasted my time reading, nor would I purchase this book. The characters are unbelievable--the main character is the ethical Hugh who is crossed over and over by his purely evil Aunt Augusta, and yet he never sees it coming and keeps coming back for more. By the end of the book I could barely care about Hugh--there's innocent and then there's obtuse. The plot is pretty predictable at times, the characters are flat & mostly one dimensional, the "coincidences" are as unbelievable as those of any Gothic novel, and much of the story is hard to believe given the time setting.

However, for a long car ride, it was perfect--certainly didn't have to think too much and the story does mostly keep you engaged.

Book Review: Excellent page-turner! My first Follett but not the last!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ken Follett has put together a great story of intrigue, deceipt, and adversity. This was my first Follett novel and I will definitely have to read more now. This book actually reminds me a lot of Jeffrey Archer's "As the Crow Flies." Just when things get bad for the good guys, they only get worse. How events unfold as the story reaches its climax had me grinning from ear to ear. Make sure to check this one out!

Book Review: Excellent story, I highly recommend it !
Summary: 5 Stars

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Follett is one of the best. If you like this book read his "Night Over Water" next. You will not be disappointed.
