I have not read all of Ruth Rendell's books but I'm a huge fan and have read many of them (nearly all of the non- "Inspector Wexford" ones, I prefer her mayhem and madness straight, without the chaser of a rational, likable detective). Demon In My View is my favorite of them all. Many of the character types and plot threads are similar to those you'll find in other Rendell works -- the socially maladapt psychopath, the chain of awful events ensuing from chance encounters with strangers, the amazing ability of human beings to misinterpret the actions of others, and so on. But here, the pieces fit together so perfectly and the twists and turns of the plot are so plausible, the result is Rendell at her most compelling.
