Book Review: ...But Somebody's Got to Do It

Though not as not entirely entertaining as `Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story' or `The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove', `A Dirty Job' remains one of the funniest novels I've read that still contains a certain aspect of the horror element.
Christopher Moore weaves a great tale here, with one addition: genuine sympathy. With the material - death, mostly - he would have been errant to ignore the `real' aspects of it, and I think he does a good job. Several scenes are almost heartbreaking in their sincerity, and for the most part the main character possesses integrity, which adds another few layers.
The biggest complaint, however, is the length. `A Dirty Job' is entirely too long for the story that it is, even as entertaining as it is. The last third of the book takes quite a while to lock together, and even though it resolves itself, one can feel the urge for it to be over rather than continue.
Overall, though, Christopher Moore has done an exquisite job yet again. Highly recommended for fans of Moore and people looking for something a little different and out there.
