Book Review: A very funny book!

I've read a few books by Christopher Moore and I can't exactly say that this one was one of his best. What never ceases to amaze me though is the fact that he can take a silly story and make it terribly funny! He creates wonderful characters that make you love them. Believe me, he will have you up all night laughing and keeping everyone around you awake too because of all the noise you'll be making!!!Book Review: A Dirty Job... of storytelling

Although I don't know much about Christopher Moore (this was my first book of his), the general ratings of his work, and especially this book, give me the impression that he might be edging into the camp of "authors who can do no wrong" in the eyes of their most devoted followers. Behind the magazine-cutout characters and their hidden rolodex of equally thin jokes hides a plot, but it lumbers and meanders along so lamely that it doesn't even really make itself known until the book's latter half.
The "twisted humor" is not twisted humor. It is inane weirdness for the sake of inane weirdness, and much of it feels so strained that it borders on just plain stupid. Comparisons of Moore to Vonnegut don't make much sense to me...Vonnegut used a unique brand of twisted humor to make biting remarks about humanity, and his humor worked because it had a clear point. Moore's book is the literary equivalent of throwing confetti, tossing all sorts of ideas across the pages for the sake of that aforementioned inane weirdness, perhaps hoping that, with the sheer number of confetti-ideas strewn about, probability favors at least some hitting home in relevance and humor.
Unfortunately, that's not the case. But perhaps the worst thing about the book, for me, came towards the middle when I said to myself, "What the hell is going on? And why do I care?"
For those who loved it, I am glad you loved it. But this being a genre I usually love, I was incredibly disappointed.

Christopher Moore's novel A Dirty Job, is some of today's fiction at it's greatest. I was unable to put the novel down until i finished, then i wanted to read it again.
I have tried to explain the plot to friends, but always feel like a mad man when using phases like "sewer harpies" and "death merchants".
Once you have started this, there is no way to stop. Once it is over you will both love it and hate it. Love the novel and hate the fact that it is finished.

This was my first Christopher Moore book I've read, but I can definitely tell you that it won't be my last. This book grabbed me right from the beginning, kept me interested throught the middle, and had me reading late into the night so I could finish. I loved it! Charlie is hilarious and his friends and family add to his own outlandish life. Mr. Moore's sense of humor is subtle at times and at other times it's down right laugh out loud funny. I love "Kitty". You'll know what that means after you read it. ;o)
