Book Reviews of A Dirty Job: A Novel

Book Review: Very funny story, and a very poignant one...characters are particuarly well-drawn, giving an emotional weight to the story
Summary: 5 Stars

A Dirty Job is, like many of Christopher Moore's other books, laugh-out-loud funny. So much so that Tammie won't let me read it in bed. In this one, though, Moore's characters are particularly well-drawn, giving an emotional weight to the story that's lacking in such previous books as Fluke and The Stupidest Angel (don't get me wrong; those books are well worth reading, too. Humor in print is really hard to do. Witness the myriad Douglas Adams knock offs of the last 25 years). This book is closer in tone to Moore's Coyote Blue, until now my favorite of his novels.

It's about Charlie Asher, a "beta male" who freaks out over anything that looks like it might disturb the order of his little life. Events such as the birth of his child at the beginning of the book really send him over the edge (he's certain baby Sophie has too many fingers and/or toes. When a nurse attempts to reassure him his kid does actually have the correct number of digits - she's counted them ten times for Charlie's benefit - he becomes fixated on the notion that Sophie had a tail which was hastily removed in the delivery room so as to not freak him out). Basically, Charlie wanders through life feeling like someone forgot to explain something major to him. To tell you the event that sets the plot in motion would ruin the rest of the story for you. I'll just say it's a very funny story, and a very poignant one, and if you've never read a Christopher Moore book this is an excellent place to start.

Book Review: Another winner by Christopher Moore
Summary: 4 Stars

Charlie Asher, a grieving husband and father is given the job of "death merchant" which is in layman's terms a soul collector. It is not a job he wants or was paticularly good at in the beginning but as he becomes more adept at it, he finds that it has it perks and of course it also has it's downside, but don't all jobs, LOL. The perks, invisiblity, hell hounds to babysit his daughter and of course prosperity among other things, the downside, well I guess having the sewer harpies wanting to pull you limb from limb could be considered a downside along with having a daughter that can kill with just a point of her finger and the word kitty. This book is so full of dry wit and dark humor that will find yourself laughing out loud. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark humor and is not bothered by profanity. It is a fun and quick read.

Truly enjoyed this book. It was my first Moore book and read Lamb right after, which I also loved. You won't be disappointed...

Book Review: Read it twice - in one sitting
Summary: 5 Stars

Love this book! Love it so much I read it in one sitting, and then...read it again. Really enjoyed it. Great characters and laugh out loud moments made it a book that will not be gathering dust on my shelf, that's for sure.
