Book Reviews of A Drink Before the WarBook Review: One Hell of a Good Book Summary: 5 StarsThis was one of the best first novels that I have ever read. The characters are very well written and the action is first rate without going over the top. Bubba is one very scary guy. Hope I never meet him.
Book Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 StarsThis is just how I like a detective story to be. Fast, gritty and just enough twists and turns. Patrick is an intelligent, wise cracking and tough detective (no wimps here)with a decidedly large soft spot for his partner Angela. Angela is also tough, smart and sassy. Together they close an intriguing and nasty case. Taking down the bad guys on the way. I hope this is a long series! Ree-views
Book Review: A Terrific First Novel Summary: 5 StarsTough, tender, and unexpectedly funny, this book leaves you wanting more. The characters are well drawn, the action tense -- a great read.Spencer on the wrong side of the tracks
Book Review: Gritty, violent, disturbing, fascinating and engrossing. Summary: 5 StarsA Drink Before the War is Dennis Lehane's first novel, and if this is any indication, we will be treated to many fine books to come.
About a man and woman private detective team from Dorchester, MA (a part of Boston), Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro become involved in a gang war and the dark side of Massachusetts politics.
It is disturbingly realistic in its violence and vision, yet as compelling as watching an automobile accident happen. We just can't seem to take our eyes off it, no matter how bad it gets.
Lehane gets his characters absolutely right. They have the problems and flaws of real people. They react the way real people do, sometimes nobly and sometimes not, but always realistically. The neighborhoods of Dorchester and the Bury are right also, and that doesn't happen often.
It may be seamy, but that's the way life is sometimes, as well as violent and distasteful, but it is a terrific novel. Don't pick it up unless you plan to reschedule all else.
