Book Review: A Sympathetic View of Scott

It is true that this book takes a sympathetic viewpoint in assessing R.F. Scott and his fatal trek to the South Pole. However, Preston is much more even-handed than was Roland Huntford in his hatchet job on Scott (The Last Place On Earth), which is the epitome of anti-Anglo bias.Plenty of legitimate grounds exist for criticizing Scott and his methods, and Preston doesn't spare him by any means. However, he couldn't possibly have been the complete nincompoop Huntford portrays him as and survived one winter at Cape Evans, much less have man-hauled a sled to the Pole and nine-tenths of the way back before succumbing to the elements. Current-day armchair "explorers" notwithstanding, Preston shouldn't be criticized for having the guts to say so.
