Book Review: Imperative

This book is a compulsory read for anyone who wants to understand the period of Reconstruction 1865-1877. Although some parts are a touch sensationalist (e.g. Tourgee's daughter's dramatic ride to save her father's life), as a reader you cannot miss the important statement the book makes. As an optimist who believed with Abraham Lincoln that the conquered Confederates "are our countrymen again" Tourgee suffers a rude awakening. He is shunned by a South that has been decimated by war and pillage, as he tries in vain to be a friend to both black and white alike, something impossible in that time. Admirably he does not lay the blame at the door of the "rebels" but fairly and squarely at the door of the government who freed the slaves and then callously abandoned them to their fate at the hands of an angry and humiliated South.
