It was just one of those quirks of chance, I was in a library and for something different I thought I'd try a biography. Parks was one of the few that was in paperback and therefore could be carried around without a hernia belt.
From that whim I discovered a gripping life story. Born to black sharecroppers in the 1920's Parks certainly did not start out with a silver spoon in his mouth. His early life is a very colourful tale of the hard scrabble to survive, but then random chance opens up incredible new doors, and places Parks in a grandstand seat to seminal moments. I'm intentionally avoiding any detail to avoid spoiling the mans own tale, it would be as wrong as a five minute version of the Shawshank Redemption
This is a hell of a book. He tells the tale well, and has a really amazing back-story to work with. This is a rare book that I feel would reach nearly any audience, whatever their background, interests, age, sex or convictions. His path is enthralling, taking in completely different worlds over his long life. The writing is excellent, well chosen, and mostly candid. The pace is good, though obviously as it follows an actual life, some sections are much more eventful than others.
So how many stars? Well it is not among the best books I've ever read, but it is certainly among the best biographies, and as one that would captivate such a wide audience I think the full 5 is just about deserved.
One thing to note however is that Parks has written several auto-biographies, though I'm certain you would remember if you had already read an earlier one.
