Book Reviews of A Little PrincessBook Review: A Classic for all time! Summary: 5 Stars
A Little Princess is truly a classic novel that will forever be popular. Mothers read it to their daughters and their daughters read it with their daughters, and so on. Sara Crewe and her triumphant story of overcoming poverty and despair by pretending that she is a princess is comforting to readers. Frances Hodgson-Burnett has a way of writing to relate to her readers. Her use of imagery is spectacular. She describes even the simplest of things, allowing the reader to get a vivid image in their minds of what Sara and her "cell-mate" Becky had to go through at Miss Minchins Seminary. Also, the characterization is extraordinary! Every time that a new character is introduced, the description that Burnett uses, makes one feel as if they are a student at the seminary, meeting Sara Crewe for the first time as well. I recommend this novel to young girls and their mothers. This storyline has a way of bringing people of all ages together. The combination of courage, strength, despair and joy force the reader to empathize with Sara as she embarks on her journey from wealth to penniless. I definitely suggest reading this book, as it will make you laugh and cry at the same time!!!
Book Review: A Classic must read for children Summary: 5 Stars
Here is a book about a young girl Sara Crewe whose father and his partner have made a great deal of money while in India. The father dies while his young daughter is away at boarding school. A school with a bitter School Mistress Ms. Minchin and a sweet young servant girl named Becky who when the money stops coming to pay for the school fees, Miss Sarah is made a servant girl as well, to pay for the debt her father wasn't able to pay. Becky and she become great friends and thru her imagination Sarah is able to transform the attic room that is bare, lacks heat and only a window that opens to the roof. Unbeknownest to her the man her father was in business with has taken the property next door complete with his eccentric Indian aid and his small monkey. The monkey would prove to be a key to Sarahs rescue when it gets loose and its master goes looking for him and discovers him being befriended by Sarah who has so little but is willing to share. Sarah isnt aware of it but the servant will become a secret angel who while Sarah is gone, will place food and other treats in the room. Coal for the fireplace and hot food. Sarah and Becky become awed but continue to scrub floors and not give up. Meanwhile the fathers friend is desperate to find his friends young daugher, as he has not only the means to care for her but he feels great guilt for not having been able to save her father before he died so that he would know that their business venture had not gone bust. It has a lovely ending that proves that Sarah and Becky were both saved. If you can, get the PBS Wonderworks video of the book as it is so true to the storyline and has a 100% British cast.
Book Review: A Favorite! Summary: 5 Stars
This book has always made me cry no matter how many times I read it. It's writen so that an adult can enjoy it as much as a child. Sara is a real heroine;she is brave and kind, but when life becomes unmbearble for her,she also becomes angry and all too human;she's a real person, not a saint, especially remarkable considering the time when this book was written. Also, it's descriptions and illustrations of Victorian England are wonderful. A great book for any special "Princess" in your life.
