Book Review: An Effective Adventure

Dennis did a wonderful job with this book. No, it's not perfect, but what is? I got everything I wanted out of it - adventure, information, wonder, emotion. As a long time Dead fan, it filled in all the missing pieces. I strayed from the band for many years, absorbing other kinds of music, all of it special in its own right, but truly, there is nothing like the Grateful Dead. A Long, Strange Trip reminded me of how unique they were, never succumbing to desperation for success, and just keeping on democratically and by their own terms, not to mention writing amazing, timeless songs. My only real complaint with the book is that the 80s/90s portion felt rushed and Jerry-centric. I know there's pressure to wrap it up when you exceed 600 pages, but the story warranted another couple hundred. I hope that McNally can one day publish a follow-up that tells all the great stories that got edited out, and maybe go deeper into the final years. At times the interludes can interrupt the book's pace, but it's essential in reminding us of the actual mechanics that went behind all these great concerts we attended and can listen to on a daily basis. Lastly, I recommend having [...] or your personal collection by your side while reading this book. It's fun to follow along with the book. Anyway, a great read.
