This book is not "a listeners guide" to John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, although there is some of that in an elementary way. It is more about the background and the making of the album, and about the album's effect at the time and its present influence and status among jazz musicians, among others. In other words, it isn't so much about the music per se, but about what happened around the making of the music and how the music inspires devotion in others.
The book is mostly constructed out of a collection of pictures and the quotes of others. It is weak in biographical details (it doesn't claim to be a biography), and those details it gives are simplified. If you don't know much about Coltrane's life, this book may seem unclear at times. The first two chapters rapidly glide over John Coltrane's life in order to provide the context for the recording of the album, then after two chapters concerned with the studio time and the music and the initial reception of the album, we are rushed through to the end of Coltrane's life in a single chapter, and then on to a final chapter covering the influence of the album since then.
