Book Reviews of A New IBS Solution

Book Review: Possible IBS solution, but there are other causes of IBS.
Summary: 3 Stars

I was diagnosed with IBS about a year ago. I am not a doctor, but I have an extensive biology background and my husband is an RN. I tried this book's recomendation of antibiotics, but they helped only for a little while. I was depressed to say the least.

With my husbands urging I had been keeping track of what I ate and what increased my symptoms, and noticed that corn was a trigger for me. Now I am not saying that corn would cause it for everyone, what I am saying is that there may be a food trigger association with IBS. When I stopped eating anything that had corn or corn derivatives in it I felt better. When I ate things with corn I felt sick within a few hours or less. I have talked with my GI doc and he has said that there can be a food relationship to IBS. If this book does not work for you, try another avenue, don't give up. IBS is a terrible disease, but I am symptom free for two months by staying off my trigger food.

I gave this book only three stars since there are other alternatives that this book does not go into. I have talked with other IBS patients that are sensitive to wheat and avoid it like the plague to feal better. This book may have a newer solution to IBS, but not the only one.

Book Review: SPOT-ON (for IBS-D)
Summary: 5 Stars

Just ordered this book, received it, and read it all in one night. I read this book because I wanted to hear his perspective on small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and the justification for using rifaximin (xifaxan) in treating it. That aside, what is great about this book is that there isn't much pussyfooting and crap about other things. It gets to the point and is substantial. He isn't selling anything.

For me, it was helpful for a few reasons.. he details and is specific on:
1. the role of stress, but that it's not a cause, but how it comes into play
2. how diet affects ibs - specifically, it's not that we're allergic to wheat or gluten, but how the glucose feeds bacteria
3. role of probiotics
4. why so many who take antibiotics feel good and have temporary symptom remission

anyhow, i really enjoyed this book. So much so that I read it two days in a row .. once and then again. I have several book on IBS, and for me, nothing tops this book. You'd think that from my review I know the person or am selling it.. but i'm not. This book does one thing that others doesn't.. it doesn't leave you guessing or asking yourself why? It explains everything backed up by studies, science, and experience. He also addresses IBS-C, and IBS-A (fluctuating)

After reading this book I was going to get a script for xifaxan.. but i actually found a digestive enzyme on here (amazon) that i've used before called ultra-zyme, that for some reason is amazing for ibs-d.. (and ive tried almost every digestive enzyme under the sun).. consider trying that product before getting into the whole antibiotic thing.. I have a review of that as well..

Good luck, and this is a great read!

Book Review: The Best Break Through In IBS To Date
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was amazing! It was the first book I have read on IBS that actually gets to the bottom of what really causes this awful condition. Dr. Mark Pimentel gave me such relief in knowing that IBS is not all in your head and there is a course of treatment to help cure it. I have gone through the testing at his facility at Cedars Sinai, and I'm about to start the treatment myself. For anyone out there suffering with IBS get this book! You will not be Review: This book actually makes sense!
Summary: 5 Stars I have had IBS-C for almost 20 years. I have been to 4 GI doctors, tried every natural alternative I could think of and have had little relief. This is the first book I bought (and I've bought many) that really made sense to me. This book explains why fiber actually makes things worse for me and why something like diet soda really makes me feel awful. I took this book to my primary care doctor and he all but laughed in my face but I demanded he help me try the protocol explained in this book. I tried it and started feeling so much better. I never did buy that IBS was caused only by stress. I'm sure it makes it worse but it does not CAUSE it. I wished I could find a doctor in my city that was a little more open minded about this so I didn't have to fight to get this treatment. I hope this book helps you as much as it has helped me.

Book Review: This book changed my life!
Summary: 5 Stars

Like the subjects in Dr. Pimentel's book, I can recall the exact date (and even hour!) of the onset of my IBS. It was after a terrible bout of food poisioning that never seemed to end. If you have a similar story, you NEED to read this book. While reading "A New IBS Solution", I found myself saying, "That's ME!" over and over - I related to it more than any other book I've read about the subject. Based on Dr. Pimentel's research, I requested a lactulose breath test from my gastroenterologist. It was literally off the charts - the nurse administering the test said that mine was the highest score (high being negative) that she'd ever seen. I cried when the time came to pay for my course of Xifaxan ($260- more than half a week's salary for me), but it was the best money I've ever spent. At first, I thought, "this isn't helping at all. Everything's the same, if not worse." But then, after I had taken a full course, I noticed something - I could drink a bit of orange juice. A bit of soda. Eat a few raw vegetables. A bit of cheese. All things that would have had me in AGONY before! I still have IBS, and I still have a lot of pain, but I have a lot more "good" days now. About five months have gone by, and I'm noticing my symptoms returning, so I'm saving up for another course of Xifaxan. If I could ever speak with Dr. Pimentel, I would give him a huge hug, and thank him for all he's done for me, and other IBS sufferers.
