Karen Swenson is what once would have been described as a "poet's poet," technically precise, vividly lyrical, and often stunningly allusive. Yet she is also a reader's poet, accessible, dramatic, and, in every poem, clear in her intent. Hers is a poetry of motion, from west to east, from childhood to maturity, from presence to absence and back. Her poetry offers a pilgrimage into silence and into self, and in self she inevitably discovers the presence of others, be they family, friends, compatriots, or those human beings we might consider most distant from us: the faithful of Tibet, the poor of Calcutta. Her poems are both human and humane. They are both unflinching in the depiction of suffering and transformative in the commitment to finding, and sharing, beauty.
