Book Review: Another golf book
Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered this book based on one or two favorable reviews I read. The book is nicely illustrated, the pages are glossy, and the text is well edited. The best feature of the book is the set of golf specific training exercises included towards the end. The instructional portion I found general in nature. The discussions of the individual topics were quite brief, and there was little of the detail and specificity that an experienced student of the game might be looking for. The book seems to be geared more toward beginners who might want to "dabble" in the game rather than toward seasoned golfers who might be looking for some new insights. Many of the exemplars of his thoughts on golf that the author cites are themselves handicap amateurs. The author mentions briefly something about the left shoulder moving out to start the swing. He also states that moving the left shoulder directly back or down at the startback steepens the swing. He provides no discussion or illustrations of this contention. One must certainly realize that moving the left shoulder out also throws the arms outside the swing plane unless compensations are made at address-i.e. opening hips and shoulders. See the writings of Carl Lohren for much more specificity on the importance of an address position that allows an outward movement of the left shoulder girdle to work effectively. I found the book pleasant but disappointing in the instructional area, not for lack of some interesting ideas but for lack of detailed discussion of these. It's a nice book to have in the library but unless I have shortchanged Mr Borgatti and missed some hidden gems it will probably stay on the shelf.
