What a surreal experience to listen (audiobook) to the philosophical musings of Byron Katie on a long car ride up Vancouver Island and into the wilderness.
Despite downplaying her own "enlightenment" in 1986 Katie nevertheless describes a way of looking at the world which is both strangely detached (i.e. seeing her own hands making breakfast without any feeling that she is directing them) and also curiously engaged (the loss of ego in attending to reality as it is.)
I like much of what Katie has published about "The Work," and I think this comes out of her genuine experience of transformation from deep depression to high gratitude. I find dangerous her view of reality as one seamless identity without good or evil. Everything is good, she says, by which she means everything happens the way it happens and so it is perfect. When we argue with reality, try to change what is, or create a story of how things "should be" we end up causing ourselves suffering. "Confusion is the only suffering," she says, by which she means, confusing what we wish would happen, with what does happen.
This clearly works for her to produce a deep peace about things like her own deteriorating eyesight. It is an opportunity to be thankful for the experience of blindness. When robbers take her possessions, she knows she doesn't need them anymore. As wonderful as the bliss this attitude creates, and listening to it for hours at a time produces an odd sense of carelessness, it has a disturbing amount of pure and unapologetic fatalism.
So after I was finished with A Thousand Names, I put in Margaret Visser's Massey Lecture, "Beyond Fate." to provide some balance!
