Book Review: A Compelling read
Summary: 5 Stars
Russell's command of language and skill with words are evident in this richly complex and compelling novel. The depth of her research, her development of characters, her descriptions of times and places, her creation of the complexities of the intermix of good and evil.....all these demonstrate Russell's artistry with words. She has created an unforgettable story and has raised issues that continue to confound thinking humans. I marvel at the consistently excellent quality of her sentence structures. For me, this book had everything going for it. I found the book painful to read, but not full of despair. I felt that I was in the time and place, and knew the people, and felt the despair but knew the hope that comes from others' courage. I could hardly endure the end for Tomitz and found the last visit by Schramm to contain so much meaning that I thought of little else the rest of the day. And there are so many other episodes of small but meaningful incidents or details in the book that strike the heart and mind. I have read THE SPARROW & CHILDREN OF GOD. Russell's third novel rises to the standards of her first two.
