Book Reviews of A Town Like Alice

Book Review: Another terrific read from Nevil Shute
Summary: 5 Stars

A Town Like Alice, at various times also published under the name The Legacy, is typical Shute - quiet, heartening, hard to put down, but full of those things which keep bringing it back to mind over the following days and weeks. This is one of his books which was made into a (rather bad) movie. Should you happen upon it on late night TV don't judge the quality of the book by the quality of the movie.

Book Review: Australia's Finest
Summary: 5 Stars

Having spent time in the Australian outback in the 1960's, I found this book (read several years later) to be the ONLY story I've EVER read that captures the true character, lifestyle, and sense of the Australian people. The story woven around World War II and and the subsequent re-uniting of the main characters years later, makes this novel compelling and impossible to put down. The PBS series Masterpiece Theatre aired this story in the late 1970's and was an excellent portrayal of Shute's work. The two-volume video, while shortening the PBS work considerably, is still an enjoyable viewing experience.

Book Review: Classic romance
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a version of this book 30 years ago and it remains one of my favorites. It is absolutely flawless. One of the all-time greats! Spent almost 15 years looking for the old Peter Finch movie and finally found it. The Bryan Brown version is good and covers most of the book but the Finch version is definitive. This is exquisite!

Book Review: Classic, Inspiring Town Like Alice
Summary: 5 Stars

A few books are worth reading and re-reading. This is one. My copy was worn out so I bought another. I have loaned or given it to many friends, each who have responded as I did. A timeless story of determination, dignity, and inspiration, A Town Like Alice makes life easier to live now. Granted, the horror and pain were based on a real historical account. But the hope and love unfold in such a way that they flow into today, as a calming relief.

Book Review: Entreprenuerial romance
Summary: 5 Stars

If you only read the back of the book, you will believe it is much grimmer than it is. Only part of this book is about the war. Ther rest is about taking risks to acheive an equitable relationship. It is, in many ways, a very feminist romance novel. At no point do we feel like anyone needs anyone else.

Also, if you have a geek for small businesses, you should check it out.

If you loved this book, you might also investigate Nevil Shute's "Trustee from the Toolroom".
