Book Reviews of A Traitor to Memory

Book Review: A Failure
Summary: 1 Stars

I'm a great fan of Elizabeth George. I've read every book she wrote, with great interest. But, she hit the wall on this one. I fought halfway through the book - disjointed plot; way too many characters; endless, boring letters to the main character's psychiatrist; constant backtracking; 800 pages; and on, and on. My reader boredom grew faster than the plot, and I put the book in the recycle bin. I didn't want to leave it in circulation to bore someone else.

Book Review: A Masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great book, maybe George's masterpiece, dense and complicated, beautifully written, superbly plotted. No-one is as good as she at dropping bombshells (in this case, practically at the end of each chapter) which completely send the story in opposite directions to where the reader thought it was going. George always keeps you on your toes, at no time in her career so brilliantly and masterfully as she does here. Could "Traitor" have been shorter? Of course. But I loved losing myself in the vastness and complexity of the plot. To be fair, I have found George dull and a little too enamored of her own voice at times, but surprisingly not in this, her lengthiest book. Start it, stick with it, you won't be sorry you did.

Book Review: A Really Good Bad Mystery
Summary: 3 Stars

This is actually the first Elizabeth George mystery I have read, so I am relieved to read so many other reviews telling me this is one of her weakest works. The ending to this one was quite disappointing. Until I got there, however, the story was doing a fine job of holding my attention and interesting me in its many well-drawn characters.

It was because those characters were so well-drawn that I was so angered by the last few pages of this book. I felt that one character does something very startlingly stupid near the end. It was not at all in keeping with any of her previous behavior and it resulted in a stunningly grim ending to the story. That ending seemed like it had been tacked on because some marketing department determined that shocking and bleak equals highbrow and arty. Sometimes shocking and bleak just comes across as forced and irritating.

Book Review: A Rush Job, but Slow Read
Summary: 3 Stars

Elizabeth George's A TRAITOR TO MEMORY needs an editor with a strong finger on the delete key. The book is much too long and plodding for the material. For a fan of the series it is a must-read, but allow yourself plenty of time because the pace of this title is plodding at best.
Everyone gets a view of the life of Lynley and his wife Helen, while Havers is down played in this volume.

Book Review: A Traitor To My Money
Summary: 1 Stars

This is just as bad as Zandie Smith's "White Teeth".
(Why do I have this rotten luck of picking works by
female writers who are full of "blah" and no substance?)
I can't believed I wasted my money and time on this.
At the risk of giving the plot away (and I'm not sure
there is one.... after ploughing through pages and pages,
I don't care anymore), the one star awarded is for the
end of the book where Gideon's girlfriend destroyed
something of his -- it seemed so hilarious to me that
I laughed out loud.

This is my first Elizabeth George novel. And I intent
to make it my only one. I have better things to do
with my time.
