Book Reviews of A Weekend in September

Book Review: A People's View of One of the Worst Hurricanes in US History
Summary: 4 Stars

Written in a narrative style, a Weekend in September, provides an "inside" look into the day the 1900 hurricane hit Galveston. It was originally written in 1957 when many of the survivors were still alive, and covers what happened to several of them before, during, and after the storm. In addition to a core group of survivors, it frequently gives details on others they knew, many who did not make it. Weems writes in a very easy to read style that captures much of the horror of those days without any unnecessary ghoulish flourish. The story of Daisy Thorne was particularly interesting, as she along with a small group of others, survived the storm in a second floor apartment that was the only one in an entire complex to remain standing after. The photo of the building is just amazing.

I'd highly recommend this to anyone wanting to get a people's eye view of the hurricane, and have a very interesting view of what Galveston was like before (for example, did you was one of the largest cities in the state at the time?). Many other books focus on the weather and the Clines, while Weem focuses on more of the ordinary folks struggling in the storm. He also includes several photos, many from Galveston before the storm, and gives a good summation of how the hurricane brought the city's arrogance in check and prompted the building of a storm wall, the raising of the land, and a better respect for mother nature.
