Book Review: A Haunting Irving Tale

My favorite Irving novel, this is both funnier than expected as well as hauntingly creepy at turns. The images are searing, as per usual for Mr. Irving, and make Ruth (and Eddie, and Marion, and Ted, and Harry) into real people. I think that they were well-served by the movie "The Door in the Floor" (the only exception being the unnecessary and distracting choice to reenact the accident while Ted describes how his sons died). It's one of those excellent stories which manages to be both sad and hopeful, surprising and believable, while still existing among the extremes of human experience. I love it.
