Book Reviews of A Wrinkle in Time

Book Review: A Boring Book
Summary: 3 Stars

I had to read this book for school and no one in my class liked it. Every one thought it was a boring book. It goes on, and on and the stuff it goes on and on about are the most boring things ever. I think the chapters were way to long and some parts I didn't understand and some of the words I have never heard of. I don't recomend this book for anyone that is not a good reader. Ever though this book has bad points to it, it was also very interesing at some parts and thoughs parts I enjoyed a little. ...

Book Review: A Briliant Science-Fiction Novel with a Hint of Drama!
Summary: 5 Stars

I though that A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle, was a wonderful and smart science-fiction novel. Meg, her friend Calvin, and her little brother genius Charles Wallus, embark in a journey with three magical old women to find her long lost father. When they wind up "tessering" to another planet in which everything is run by a big brain, IT, everyone is in immense danger. This charmingly witty, yet astonishingly intelligent sci-fi is a delight to all science-fiction, religious, family, or just "love-a-good-book" readers.

Book Review: A Children's Book with Depth
Summary: 5 Stars

I first read this book in 5th grade (1989) and recently re-read it because I wanted to give a copy to my friend's new child so that he would eventually enjoy it. L'Engle's ability to explain abstract concepts in a way that's easy to understand is something I didn't appreciate until now. This book will make for a fond memory to those who read it.

Book Review: A Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently saw the movie version of this, which prompted me to dig out the tattered and much-loved paperback of `A Wrinkle in Time' which I have kept since grade school.

This is the story of Meg Murry, a misfit at school, her brilliant little brother, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe, the unlikely star of the basketball team. These three meet an odd assortment of bedsheet-stealing old ladies, Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which. The ladies are not what they appear, and whisk the children away on a quest to find Meg and Charles' missing father on the far-away planet of Camazotz, where everyone is perfectly alike, to their detriment. L'Engle's deceptively simple prose evokes the warmth of love and the chill of fear with equal facility. If you have not read this, you are never too old.

Book Review: A Classic SF Tale That's Not Just for Kids
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently purchased this book and read it again for the first time in about 20 years and was amazed at how vivid it remained. More than just an "introduction" into SF for kids, L'Engle deals heavily with the concept of individual identity and conformity in her classic tale. At times a little elementary and oversimplistic, the book nonetheless has sustained the test of time and it is likely that people will continue to read this book for many years to come. A splendid edition to any collection, this version comes with an updated forward from the author.
