I read A Wrinkle in Time last year when I was in the sixth grade, and I just loved it!The plot of the book is that Meg Murry and her brother- Charles Wallace must save their father from the It by going through the tesseract into different worlds. Meg's and Charles Wallace's father mysteriously dissapeared after experimenting with the fifth dimension of time travel. He's been gone since Meg was a little girl, in fact, Meg doesn't even remember him that much. Now it's their turn to rescue him. Meg and Charles receive help from 3 ladies- Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which. I recommend this book to 5-8 graders. Also recommended: A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and Harry Potter series.
Book Review: A Great Story Summary: 5 Stars
What's wrong Meg?" Charles Wallace asked, "why are you being so belligerent and uncooperative?" The voice was Charles Wallace's voice, and yet it was different too, somehow flattened out, almost as a voice might have sounded on a two-dimensional planet. Meg grabbed wildly at Calvin, shrieking, `That isn't Charles! Charles is gone!"(pg132) A Wrinkle in Time is an adventure book about three children, Charles Wallace, Meg, and Calvin. The three of them meet at an old haunted house. Charles had been there the night before, and met Mrs.Who, Mrs.Which, and Mrs.Whatsit. They were witches of some sort. The three children where taken away to find Meg and Charles's father. Their father was a scientist working for the government. A group of his friends came up with the idea of a fifth dimension or tessering to another dimension. Her father tessered onto a planet where every one was the same, because he refused not to become one of them they took him captive. The children have to save him before they become one of the planet followers. My favorite part in this book was when Mrs. Who and Mrs. Whatsit explain tessering to the children
Book Review: A Journey Through the Fifth Dimension Summary: 4 Stars
I'm sure that you have been on a journey before, maybe to Florida or Hawaii, but probably not through the fifth dimension! In the Newberry Award winning book, A Wrinkle in Time, three children go on an amazing journey to find and save their father from the creatures that actually live in the fifth dimension. Madeleine L'Engle did a wonderful job with the first book of her series. It is 211 pages of a spectacular story that is amusing to read. I could read this book many times without getting bored. The great word choice that she used helped make the story easy to visualize. She has written two sequels to A Wrinkle in Time. They are called A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet.
A couple of years after Meg's father disappeared into the fifth dimension, Meg's very intelligent baby brother Charles Wallace befriends a strange old lady named Mrs. Whatsit. Mrs. Whatsit lives with her two friends, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which. One day, while walking to visit Mrs. Whatsit, Charles and Meg meet Calvin. The three become inseparable friends in a reasonably short amount of time. Before they know it, the strange old ladies have decided to take them on a journey through the fifth dimension. Many surprising events take place when they leave Calvin, Charles, and Meg on Camazotz, a planet in the fifth dimension where there are many dangers that the kids have yet to experience.
I really liked how Madeleine L'Engle described characters and objects. She added many details to her descriptions. Some are nearly a paragraph long! One example is when she described Mrs. Whatsit, "The age was impossible to tell, for it was completely bundled up in clothes. Several scarves of assorted colors were tied about the head and a man's felt hat perched atop." That is only a very short part of the description. A few more examples are when she described the food on Camazotz and the man with the red eyes. She used several great description words.
A Wrinkle in Time is upsetting as well as exciting. This is only one of the many reasons why it is such a wonderful book. One example of an upsetting part in the story is when Meg was turned to stone. I thought that she would never be cured. An example of an exciting part in the story is when Meg, Charles Wallace, Calvin, Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which went to fight the Dark Thing. I could not wait to read what happened to them next. Madeleine L'Engle did a great job of writing this story.
A Wrinkle in Time is an enjoyable book for all ages. It is unlike any other book that I have read. It has an exciting plot and unpredictable characters. The ending of each chapter kept me guessing. This is one of the best books I have ever read! It has been reviewed by many different people. This Newberry Award Winner is an original book that I think everybody should read!
Book Review: A Journey of Self-Discovery Summary: 5 Stars
This book features Meg Murray, a twelve year-old girl who feels frustratingly different from everyone else. She is called a moron at school and is constantly getting in trouble and sent to Mr. Jenkins' office. To make matters worse, her father has been missing for a long while and people are talking. This infuriates Meg, but she feels helpless to do anything about it. She wishes she were more like her younger twin brothers, Sandy and Dennys, who fit in so well with everyone else, and she cannot comprehend how her youngest brother, Charles Wallace, can remain indifferent to what everyone else thinks. Her mother, too, remains so calm and composed in the face of their troubles, but try as she might, Meg cannot help boiling over with anger and sadness. Things seem to get a bit better when Meg finds a precious friend in Calvin, who makes her feel worthy, special, and needed. Yet Meg still feels that she will never be anything but a moron and that nothing will be right until her father returns. When Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which enter the Murray's life, Meg begins the journey of a lifetime, not just of the body, but of the mind and spirit as well. Faced with the formidable task of saving her father and the universe from an evil force, Meg must confront many new and sometimes uncomfortable ideas. Through her encounters with other planets and creatures, Meg discovers that her human perspective and understanding are just one among many, and perhaps quite limited in comparison. She also realizes from her experiences on the dark planet Camazotz that being like everyone else is not necessarily a good thing, and that being alike and being equal are two very different things indeed. Finally, Meg learns that her father is not able to solve every problem and protect her from every danger, and that she must rely on her own strength as well. But what strength could she possibly possess that could overcome an evil so large as IT?
Book Review: A MARVELOUS MASTERPIECE! Summary: 5 Stars
Madeleine L' Engle had showed me an interesting piece of work. This novel had so much incredibility in it. A Wrinkle in Time has drama, action, and fantasy blended together which makes this book so marvelous. I read this book when I was in fifth grade. I participated on a book club... I was so surprise to read tons of books that I had never heard before. I encountered this book and when I read the back of the book I was so surprise to see all the things that revolves around the book. One of the cool things in this book is the life of the Murry family. Margaret "Meg" Murry is a teen who underestimate herself. She thinks that she is a stupid girl... that is after her dad vanished from one of his work. Charles Wallace, Meg's little brother have an incredible instinct that no one else knows besides the family Charles Wallace often tells his sister that he could hear voices and indeed he could; it was Mrs. Whatsit Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which. After a short amount of time Calvin a kid that is about Meg's age showed up in Meg's life. He helped Charles Wallace and Meg finding their father.
The three women had promised them that they could see their father again, after destroying IT that is. (An evil brain that could reset your mind and promised to give complete security, in return they should give up their freedom and individuality) Mrs. Whatsit told them that their father was in Camazotz and they must stop IT before it's too late. Going to Camazotz was easy; all they have to do is to tesser. Tesser or tesseract means Via Wrinkles.
Example: Let's say we have a string and an ant is trying to walk through it... if you put both end near each other it would be easier to got o the other end.
Before leaving the three women provided the kids little gifts. Mrs. Who gave Calvin her pair of spectacles. It could help him go or see through anything and Mrs. Whatsit gave Meg her faults. The three kids were put in Camazotz to face the evil and of course to set their father free. Charles Wallace was caught by the man with red eyes and turned Charles Wallace completely different. Meg was the only person who could save him for she is the only person who knows him since birth. It was hard for Meg. Therefore Meg insisted that love is the most important thing and that she loves her brother more than anything else in the world. Charles Wallace tried hard to resist IT and by what he heard Charles Wallace went back from being what he is before. Love also destroyed it for love is the only thing that could always make him sick.
This book inspired me for this is the only book that made me realize that even if life is a tough one, you could always look out for somebody to guide you through. And the most important thing of all is the one and only; LOVE!
