Book Review: ACROSS THE ENDLESS RIVER

Thad Carhart's novel ACROSS THE ENDLESS RIVER is truly original and truly well written.
A slew of "coming to America" novels and histories have been written. This is the first book I've read (or heard of) that deals with an individual of mixed (French and Native American) ancestry who, by chance and opportunity, ventures to Europe. The author's choice of this theme draws one forward, and his ability to describe in detail the stages of Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau's physical and internal journeys from birth to Europe keeps the story fresh as the reader progresses from chapter to chapter.
Carhart's style is as it should be: invisible. No unnecessary or intrusive similes or metaphors clutter his writing. Yet his descriptions -- of a buffalo hunt on the western plains, a drawing room in a palais in Paris or a stag hunt in Wurttemberg -- are written with the greatest care and achieve the greatest effect. So with the book as a whole: a word more or a word less might have wrecked the whole.
Carhart has obviously read the available historical detail of Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau's birth and youth, and, when the available history runs out, he has elided with that available history a complete fictionalized picture of Charbonneau's life in Europe. This seamless shift from fact to fiction is an singular achievement.
Thus the book is a pleasure to read and, as it causes the reader to think about the circumstances of Charbonneau's dual life, and for that matter all our dual lives, it will be remembered by anyone who reads it.
Thus this reader hopes there will be a sequel.
