Book Reviews of African SafarisBook Review: AFRICAN SAFARIS Summary: 5 StarsThis book has 173 pages, 21 B/W photos, but no maps. The forward is by Lord Cranworth. The book was first published in May 1946 at Nakuru press, Kenya. The book is dedicated to his wife ' Lorna Anderson'.
'Andy' Anderson was born in 1878 and in 1899, at the age of 21, he went to South Africa to fight the boers. In 1907, he went with Dr Harold Brooks, for hunting safari to British Somaliland. He did some shooting, saw wonderful sunrises and enjoyed intense silence of the dark. He was severely mauled by a lioness on his right knee. He was carried to civil hospital in Aden and further 5 months in hospital at home, and had stiff knee for life.
In 1909, he went to Mukuyu in BEA (Kenya colony). In 1912, Anderson meets Jim Sutherland (Bwana Sutherlandi), in Tanga aboard a German steamer. He go to Ituri forest in Congo, to hunt the elephants, 2 and 1/2 tons of ivory. In 1914, they go to German East Africa for photographic expedition of Game i.e a charging elephant. Then news came that GERMANI and INGALASA were fighting in Europe. So they tried to escape to Portugese East Africa. On 20.11.1914, Anderson joined his regiment at Ypres in France, where he injured his leg again.
He then went to join "Norforce" in Nyasaland. Jim Sutherland suffered from dysentery and repeated malaria. Andy gets typhoid fever and malaria and is sent home. From 1921-22, Andy shot elephants in Uganda and between 1923-24 in Tanganyika. He witnesses an elephant lying on his side using an ant hill as a pillow. In 1925-26, he shoots in French Equatorial Africa, saddling on a mule. Elephants are terrified of grass fire. In 1932, at Yubo, Jim Sutherland dies.
In june 1937, his gun bearer Feragi died. Anderson then as a white hunter, talks about some of his strange guests on safari. He also took Royals on safari. In 1946, he had a severe attack of malaria and went to South Africa to rest. But on 15.7.1946, at the age of 68, he died of pneumonia.
This rare book is excellent and easy to read and has some beautiful B/W pictures. Having born in Kenya, I enjoyed the stories by author and reccomend this book highly. Like the author says "asante, kwaheri, bahati" (thankyou, goodbye and good luck).
Read and ENJOY.
