Book Reviews of Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America (America: a Cultural History)

Book Review: Absolutely fascinating
Summary: 5 Stars

Fischer showed me a view of American settlement and the origin of our customs and folkways which I had never seen. I hold a B.A. in history and am 60 years old. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more of our origins, especially the origins of our different conceptions of Liberty.

Book Review: Accurately depicts Quakers.
Summary: 5 Stars

Before I bought this remarkable book, I read the reviews and saw that a number of readers thought it was weak on Quakers. The book is spot on about traditional Quakers. I have made a personal study of that issue. The problem is that Quakerism after it emerged from quietism changed its focus and by World War I became strongly identified with pacificism, rather than its other testimonies, and that attracted new adherents who were opposed to American foreign policy in the twentieth century. In the result, a brilliant book accurately depicting the Pennsylvania Quakers who supported Benjamin Franklin and spawned the expression, "Philadelphia lawyer."

Book Review: Albion's Seed
Summary: 5 Stars

A fascinating history of the United States and the influence of cultural certainties. This book goes a long way toward explaining the current culture wars and the consequent political developments. Most of today's leading issues are better understood when viewed through the perspective provided by this book.

As a Scots-Irish decendent I was particularly fascinated by the section dedicated to the Scots-Irish and the influence of clans in the New World. I finally understand the Southern fetish with who your family was.

Somewhat academic, the book nonetheless is a treasure for the determined reader.

Book Review: Albion's Seed
Summary: 5 Stars

Five stars is not enough for this book.
Anyone with the even the slightest interest in our history should have this book. It explains our early history in a way that is easily understood and points out why different areas, right up to the present time, have such diverse ideas and customs. For those of us who have English ancestors, we are shown where we came from, when we came and ultimately, shows us who we are. The best book of our history that I have ever encountered.

Book Review: Albion's Seed
Summary: 5 Stars

Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America (America: a Cultural History)What an informative book about our early Colonial American history as we relate to our British ancestors. It has given me much insight about the lifestyle of my Colonial ancestors. It is also well-documented, which I appreciate. I feel that I am getting to know my British as well as my American ancestors much better.
