Book Reviews of Alcoholics Anonymous - Big Book 4th Edition

Book Review: I am a recovering addict
Summary: 5 Stars

Our sickness is physical, emotional and spiritual. These words probably apply to a lot of people, addict and non-addict alike.

The book has been my guidebook along a spiritual journey stripped of all pomp and circumstance. It has offered me a way to salvation, a personal relationship to my God as I see Niya. If you are a recovering addict you understand.

It is remarkably similar to many of the principle religious texts, but boiled down and distilled to an essence. I found in it similarities with some of the cutting edge treatments used in psychological practice today, e.g. cognitive behavioral theory.

No one leads us to redemption and spiritual awakening, but our own hearts. So if you read the book and find that it doesn't touch someplace very deep inside, wait a few years and try again. Keep coming back.

It is all there.

Book Review: AA Big Book the second best book ever after the bible
Summary: 5 Stars

Story after story that distills what addiction is like for those who suffer and for those who care. The book shows that addicts are not alone and that there is hope.

Book Review: Life Saver
Summary: 5 Stars

This book saved my life. When I was in the grips of my addiction I didnt know where to turn. Fortunately I found the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and the program outlined inside. To this day I must give the credit to AA for the transformation of my life. Highly recommended for those suffering from addiction, family members, friends, and counselors in the field of addiction.

Book Review: Time For A Re-write
Summary: 2 Stars

.

No argument with the content or the history of the book.

However, this book was written in 1939 and it shows. The language is stuffy and impentrable in many places. The author uses too many complex sentences and too many exotic words. Also, there are numerous culutral references that are totally lost on the reader in 2006.

I know AA has seen a sharp decline in the sales of this book over the past 15 years. I can see why many in recovery today have little use for it (more than half of AA meetings no longer have the book around to sell). One wonders whether the message no longer resonates for the contemporary alcoholic, or if the stilted and cumbersome writing of the author leaves too many befuddled about what the message really is.

I'd recommend the book if it was given a contemporary re-write. Until then, it's like trying to read the Bible in the original Sanskrit language.
