Book Review: ". . . the most dramatic and improbable life among the founding fathers."

My 9th grade history teacher told us that we became one nation only after we stopped referring to our country using the plural ("The United States ARE fighting for freedom.") and began using the singular ("The United States IS fighting for freedom.") The founding father most responsible for that transition is Alexander Hamilton. His story is told in a detailed, entertaining narrative that is as demythologizing and educational as it is fun to read.
Revolutionary War hero, shaper of our Constitution, molder of our federal government, confidante of George Washington both on the battlefield and in the halls of government, Hamilton was most responsible for our country's embracing capitalism as its economic base. More than anyone else, he gave our country a sound monetary policy and created an economic environment in which enterprising people and foreign nations were willing to invest. And here's wonderful news: Ron Chernow tells the story of how all this came to be in a highly readable, 3-dimensional biography. Not only does he bring Hamilton to vivid life, he also gives life to other important players of the federalist period: the slick chameleon Aaron Burr, the brilliant but pompous John Adams, the well-intentioned but self-serving Thomas Jefferson, the indispensable George Washington, and not least the loving, supportive, charitable Eliza Hamilton. As this superb biography makes clear, Eliza was a powerful and self-sacrificing support for her husband, and without her, his accomplishments would've undoubtedly been significantly less.
One word of caution: be sure you have plenty of time when you reach the section of this book that covers the tragic Burr/Hamilton duel. You will not be able to stop reading.
