Book Review: Captivating, illuminating, obtuse and without resolution

There is a sheer tension and depth to the author's prose that draws you in to the complex psychological mind games played out between the main participants of the murder and subsequent imprisonment and examination of Grace Marks' sanity. Margaret Atwood has obviously researched her topic thoroughly, as it has the genuine feel of authenticity in terms of the morals and attitudes of the era and the understanding of psychotic psychology as it stood at the time. Furthermore, it also amply demonstrates the media and public interest that was almost a hysteria when a young attractive woman was involved in a hideous and distasteful murder.The story unfolds through Grace retelling her experiences through her life, prompted by the free thinking psychologist that undertakes the task that many have given up hope of achieving, i.e. the unravelling of the mind of this enigmatic woman and her involvement in the murders perpetrated. That is, whether she was the jealous, scheming manipulator, or the unwilling, frightened follower of the condemned man.
Sexual tensions mount and morals are breached in an ever spiralling web of deceit and uncertainty.
The stimulation of reading this book was enormous and provided many insights and avenues of exploration to satisfy the ever curious dark side of my mind. I cannot recommend this enough!
