Book Review: A Book as beautiful as its Subject

If there were noting else attractive about this book, it looks tremendous! Of course, one should not judge a book by its cover, but what the cover promises, the book delivers. Elder paints a sympathetic, though not rose-tinted portrait of the actress who came to define Twentieth Century Fox. This book is about as far from the stereotypical Hollywood biography as it is possible to get. Informative and entertaining, it shows itself to be the work of a scholar with sympathy for her subject. Elder is not afraid to admit to gaps in her knowledge where those gaps exist, rather than trying to fill those gaps with speculation. The Alice Faye that emerges from this book is human, but still the lovely star of such films as 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' and 'Tin Pan Alley'.All in all, this book is a pleasure to own and to read. Highly reccomended.
