Book Review: The First Real Memoir of a Crossdresser

My initial reaction was a quick rear-back with accompanying "whoa, boy" followed by a pause to reflect and realize that - though I still can hardly believe it possible - the author was right: there hadn't been a contemporary crossdressing memoir that even I (reviewer for Transgender Forum) could call to mind.

Well, we crossdressers no longer suffer from the dearth of such books, because Dr. Novic has done such a good job in relating his own informative and insightful story. I am delighted not to have had to plow through a dozen inferior volumes to get to this choice one.

Beyond being the first of its kind, Alice in Genderland is rather well done and well presented. The latter I especially appreciated since the publisher, iUniverse, isn't any better known for editing than any other print-on-demand publisher. Alice in Genderland benefits not only from the author's easy and articulate grasp of English but also from his refreshing, let-it-all-hang-out candidness.

I've read few more memorable scenes than those that portray Richard's life and love with the women in his life and Alice's pursuit of passion "as a woman with a man." The author's road to self-actualization isn't always smooth and easy, even with the advantage of an eventual wife who is remarkably accepting of Richard's crossdressing, as long as it's kept at a respectful distance from her. But, it's the author's ability to make the bumps--and grinds--along his way so fascinating that makes this book destined to be a classic!
