Book Reviews of All She Wanted

Book Review: A Little Hard To Follow The Author
Summary: 4 Stars

After Hilary Swank won her Oscar for a movie I never heard of, I rented the video. After renting the video, I was so curious about Teena Brandon, I bought the book. The book still didn't answer all my questions and the author kinda jumped around from person-to-person, place-to-place. She was a little hard to follow. Sad, sad story. Still left me with so many questions!

Book Review: Nice complement to Boys Don't Cry
Summary: 4 Stars

All She Wanted is one step above the usual check-out counter mass-market true crime novels, yet as with this genre, it left me unsatisfied because it couldn't answer the multitude of questions the life of Brandon Teena left me with.

I decided to read this book because I was fascinated by the film, Boys Don't Cry. It was disturbing, but I also felt that there must be a bigger story to Brandon than just what the movie portrayed. Within that context, the book did its job well. However, here's the problem: perhaps the book did its job so well that I found myself gravitating towards renting the movie again as I got to the end -- I missed the romanticism of it. The movie tried to make you feel for Brandon, and the book tried to make you understand the reality of his situation -- and the two just don't come together well at all.

But overall, I am all the more informed for having been exposed to both sides of the story. Jones's writing is nothing spectacular, but then again, it wasn't like I expected it of her.

Book Review: Thought provoking
Summary: 4 Stars

This book really sparked my curiosity. I peeled through the book, waiting to see what the sequence of events was going to be. Yes, the ending was no suprise. But, it left me yearning to find out more and more about Teena Brandon and the people who were in her life. It was a tragic story.

Book Review: This is the worst book I have ever read.
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this book because I am intrigued with gender issues in our society, but I quickly realized that I made a poor purchase. Did Aphrodite Jones have an editor? Was this book proofread? There are so many grammatical and punctuation errors; I can't believe that this book made it to print. Jones writes as if she is trying to hold the attention of your average eight grader. This book contains every cliche ever invented; it is insulting to the readers' collective intelligence to read this horrendous writing. In Jones' introduction, she endlessly praises herself as if she has written a Pulitzer Prize winning novel. The only saving grace is the subject material. Don't waste your money.

Book Review: a quick and easy read
Summary: 4 Stars

If you are looking for an unbiased presentation of the facts involving the murder of Brandon Teena, Lisa Lambert , and Phillip Devine, this is a book you won't be able to put down. If you are searching for a literary work of art, you may want to keep searching. Despite the typos and grammatical errors, I thought the book was easy to read and understand. I would recommend this book to all true crime buffs.
