Book Review: Basic and Repetative

Written by the well qualified husband and wife team of John and Deborah Behler (both senior members of reptile conservation organisations) one would expect that 'Alligators and Crocodiles' would be filled with trivia and anecdotes about their experiences as well as detailed accounts of the animals lifestyles and biology. However at just 63 pages long it really doesn't have the chance to be much more than a brief overview of the main crocodillian species.
It begins with an introduction, most of which is repeated in subsequent chapters. It then goes on to describe the basic physiology of the crocodillian family and their reproductive habits. A large proportion of this is also repeated in the major section of the book, which describes the different species in varying amounts of detail. The book concludes with a short summary on conservation and ends with a brief species fact-file.
The best feature of this book is the photography. The Behler's have taken work from a wide range of wildlife photographers including Doug Perine who would go on the win the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition for his work with sharks. These photos are all of the highest standard and are relevant to the text.
This book contains excellent photography and you do get a basic and well explained foundation on which to build your knowledge. But it is just not substantial enough to give it any more than three stars. I would instead recommend Lynne Kelly's 'Crocodile: Evolutions Great Survivor' which is far more detailed (288 pages) and 6 pence cheaper!!
