Reviewer: A retired sociologist and local gov't plannerAsma Hasan's book, "American Muslims - The New Generation" was one of the first ones that I read on the life of Muslims in America. Since I am leading a class of retired professionals entitled "Approaches to Islam" I have read many others. I recently reread her book and found much in it that I had seen in the other books that I had read, What I liked best about Ms Hasan's book is that it describes how one living person whose parents immigrated from Pakistan has shaped a coherent approach to Islam after going to schools in America, being a teenager growing up in America, and a college student in America. She is a good representative of an all-American young woman, following the strict tenets of Islam, yet blending the cultural aspects (which are distinct from the religious aspects) of Muslims with selected ones from mainstream American culture as many other Muslims born in America have done and are still working at doing. Most of the other books that I have read present a more academic view and it has been very dificult for me to find stories about those many Muslims who have blended into the American life-style while keeping true to the intent of Islam. Ms Hasan includes much useful information and relates it with a bit of humor. She wrote about hijab (wearing the scarf and dress in general), attitudes of Muslims and of Anglo-Americans, the true meaning of jihad, origins of the faith, the five pillars, dating, and much more. I enjoyed and appreciated how she justifies her coherent adaptation. I believe that by the time many Muslims in America are second and third generation decendents of immigrants, the conflicts that the new generation Muslim-Americans born in America here face today will be lessened. It is important to separate from the universal truths of Islam that part that is derived from the particular ethnic culture in which a person has lived. The dress that some Muslim women wear when out in public varies according to whether she is of Lebanese, Pakistani, Saudi Arabian, or Indonesian background. I have found that those of Lebanese-American, Syrian-American, and Palestinian-American backgrounds less often wear the scarf and are more often indistinguishable from those of Anglo-American, or Italian-American backgrounds. This, in part, is because many are 2nd and 3rd-generation descendents of immigrants. Converts to Islam oftend to emphasize the more traditional approach to sharpen and focus their new identity. This is true of many converts to a new religion or also to a different political party. Most writers in trying to describe Islam and Muslims in America, similarly emphasize the more traditional aspects of the religion. By so doing, they do not have to discuss the many variations
