Book Review: General Tommy Frank's view of the War in the Middle East

General Tommy Franks was the commander of United States Central Command (CENTCOM), from 2000 to 2003. His position, although a matter of public record, was such that many people were unaware of his tenure there. He is, however, probably better known for his role in the war in Iraq where he led American troops to victory over an Iraqi Army that had been defeated in the First Gulf War and never recovered its former strength.
General Franks, true to military tradition and in keeping with his professionalism as a soldier, does not offer criticism of the role-playing politicians who were his superiors. Rather, he sticks to the facts of what happened on the world stage. He does act surprised that no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, but still maintains that our invasion was justified. He says, "While we may not have found actual WMD stockpiles, what the Coalition discovered was the equivalent of a disassembled pistol, lying on a table beside neatly arranged trays of bullets." The only proof he offers was the discovery of a 155mm artillery shell filled with four liters of Sarin nerve gas. This was in Baghdad in May of 2004.
General Franks points out that "terrorists have been killing Americans for more than two decades," and that American intelligence collection has not kept pace with the threat. This is because the CIA has some 1100 case officers worldwide to deal with these threats. In light of this fact, I think General Franks has hit upon an important point: much of our intelligence in the area was flawed because, in essence, there wasn't any. Thus, we tend to forget the obvious: the terrorists who masterminded 9/11/2001 weren't from Iraq and
Saddam Hussein had no link to al-Qaeda.
A good read for any one interested in one side of this crucial period in American military history.
