Book Review: A Thrilling Story Well Told

There's a madman on the loose in London threatening to kill scores of people with nerve gas. Apparently he's a tortured veteran of the Great War with an ax to grind. He wants better treatment for the shellshocked and the homeless, or else. Okay, at least he's not asking folks to believe in the one true god, but still you don't kill innocents to get your way, no matter how just you believe your cause to be.
Among the Mad is the kind of story that will draw you right in. You'll see the injustice, maybe even sympathize with the bad guy. You'll also see what it's like for those soldiers home from the war and how for some of them what they've been though will never go away.
Maisie Dobbs, because the madman has mentioned her in a note to the police, is part of an investigation which is trying to catch him. She's doing a sort of profile on him and she'll find herself being drawn ever closer into his web and, as you're reading the story, you'll see what it was like for the mentally ill and the shellshocked back in 1931 and you'll wonder if it's much different today. Sure we don't tie them down anymore, we have drugs, but is there a difference?
This is a great read. If you're looking for a good story, one that'll keep you up throughout the night, look no further.
