Book Review: A Good Whodunnit
Summary: 4 Stars
First, let me say that this is my first Deborah Crombie novel. Since this is not the first novel in the Gemma James/Duncan Kincaid series, I was missing some of the back story as I read this book. However, I will say that I think this book stands alone just fine. The references to previous storyline in the series were not distracting or disruptive to the story in "And Justice There Is None".
The story is a good police drama/murder mystery. Crombie has created an intricate plot, and while I was a little frustrated in the beginning, trying to keep everyone straight and figure out who the girl in the recollections was, vis a vis the current story, it all worked out well. That kind of thing can be dicey - either too disruptive to the story's flow or working in competition with the 'current' story. Crombie walks the fine line well, informing the reader of just enough information each time. It's really well-done. And in the end, the reader is just a step ahead of Gemma and Duncan, figuring out who the killer is and why.
The problem I have with the book and the reason I only gave it four stars is that, quite frankly, I found the characters and their interactions pretty ho-hum. I appreciate the fact that Gemma and Duncan are pretty average people with average struggles. Crombie gets inside that stuff well, with the typical insecurities, financial realities, less than perfect lives, etc. Perhaps this is where I have missed something, coming into the middle of a series, but I just didn't see the 'zing' between Gemma and Duncan. I understand that there was transition going on in their relationship in this book, with them moving in together, but then all the more reason to show that in the midst of all the heaviness, they have their moments where they see each other and "zing". I'm not talking about trashy romance, I'm talking about the richness and depth of a relationship that is more than just something steady in a world fraught with violence and sadness. Dialogue, in general, in the book is just that - dialogue. There's no snap to it. I didn't really hold on to the characters when I finished the book; I was just glad to have the whole story resolved and the murderer revealed. Yeah, I guess I was more attached to the puzzle of the mystery than invested in the people in the story.
That leaves me wondering if I'll pick up another one of Crombie's books. However, if you're a fan of a good mystery, this one should keep you hooked.
