Book Reviews of Andrew Henry's Meadow

Book Review: I LOVE LOVE LOVE this Book!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

All the other reviewers have said it all before me, so I shall not repeat things again. All I can say and add is that I LOVED this book as a child and I LOVE reading it to my boys now! It has really stood the test of time like her other classic "The Summerfolk", which I also highly reccomend!

Book Review: If you have a little Mr. Fix It
Summary: 5 Stars

As a child my husband got into his father's tools and fixed the door knobs and his mother's vacuum cleaner. Like Henry, he had two older sisters, and unlike Henry, only one older brother, and he did not mind being alone because he was always working on things.

My husband had mentioned this book before, and how about he used to tell his other classmates to read it because it was such a good book. He checked it out from the school library frequently. I ordered a copy and quickly read through it realizing why he liked the book so much: he was just like Henry, and now I live in his meadow, lol.

If you know a child inclined to work that is hands-on or making their own place, I am sure that they will enjoy this classic book. The illustrations are very endearing in that 1950's style. My husband thought it was the goldmine among his more expensive anniversary gifts this year.;P

Book Review: Love the illustrations!
Summary: 5 Stars

I heard about the creative illustrations of houses built by an inventive boy, which is why I bought the book. Andrew Henry liked to build things. When his family is annoyed by his unique inventions, he decides to build his own house in a secluded meadow. One by one, other children, whose interests are unappreciated by their families, come to Andrew Henry to have their own house built in the meadow. Andrew Henry creates unique homes for the birdwatcher, the fisherman, the petkeeper, the lady of the castle, and so on, until the parents of the children decide they would rather put up with their children's interests nearby than have the children set up their own homes away from home. The lovely homes Andrew Henry builds in the meadow are worth buying this book!

Book Review: My First Book from the Weekly Reader Book Club
Summary: 5 Stars

In 1971 my parents enrolled me in the Weekly Reader Summer Book Club. The first book club selection I received in the mail was Doris Burn's "Andrew Henry's Meadow."
"Andrew Henry's Meadow" is the delightful tale of Andrew Henry Thatcher, whose hobby is building and inventing contraptions. Although loved by his family, he is often misunderstood which leads to his departure to "build a home for himself." During his journey he comes to a meadow, the perfect place to build his house. It isn't long before Andrew Henry is joined by friends who are loved, but misunderstood by their families. Andrew puts his engineering talents to good use by building houses for his friends which results in a small village. However life in the town Stubsville is turned upside down when parents discover their children are missing. After a frantic four day search by the townspeople, Sam, the Thatcher's dog leads them to Andrew Henry's Meadow, where the children are reunited with their parents. In the end Andrew Henry is given a corner of the house basement as a workshop to build his contraptions. His family is always curious to see what he will build next.
It is a pleasure to see a much loved book become a classic and celebrate its 40th anniversary.
May this timeless classic endure another 40 years of bringing reading enjoyment to children and their families.

Book Review: My all time favorite book.
Summary: 5 Stars

Andrew Henry's Meadow is my favorite book from childhood. The illustrations are simple pen and ink. The story is delightful. Andrew Henry wants a place to build his creations. Other children follow him with passions of their own. In doing so Andrew Henry's Meadow is born. It's a story I've read to my children over and over. I am thrilled to find the Anniversary editions to add to my children's libraries. I highly recommend Andrew Henry's Meadow by Doris Burn, who wrote and illustrated the book. It's a treasure.
