Book Review: "Highway odyssey"? Are you kidding?

I have always had a special affection for accounts of the great American highway. After all, what is more American than "the road", with its vast spaces, odd characters and diverse local cultures? I cannot be blamed, then, for having been drawn in by the back-cover description of "Angels" as a "highway odyssey". I love highway odysseys. Had I recalled, however, that the original "Odyssey" was only about one-third "odyssey" ("an extended adventurous voyage") and mostly, after his return home, an excruciatingly long account of Ulysses' vengeance on Penelope's suitors, I would have passed this one up, as I should have. The first third of "Angels", indeed, includes, with little fuss, a cross-country bus ride, with an eventual and extended sojourn in Chicago and a quick and undescribed hop back to Phoenix. Fully two-thirds of the story, however, concerns the planning, execution and aftermath of a bank robbery - all very grim, exquisitely detailed and relentlessly local. There is no "wild ride cross-country" as offered on the back cover. The only truth in that advertising is that, yes, this is a "portrait of America's dispossessed". So. If you are looking for a gritty, hopeless and unredeeming portrait of life among the culturely and intellectually dispossessed, this one's for you. If you seek the great American highway odyssey, look elsewhere.
