Book Reviews of Animus

Book Review: "Animus" should be read over and over
Summary: 5 Stars

"Animus" is undoubtedly a "must-read," because in just 278 pages, it presents the story simply of life itself - struggle, suffering, passion, courage and the importance of choices - in an entirely fresh and surprising way.

From the first page you are drawn into the world of two brothers, one whose past, present, and future is tied indelibly to a mysterious and powerful force that even he does not understand. And by this force the reader - and the characters themselves - are led subtly forward, often unawares, through a quiet plot rife with tension. In this way, you are led cleverly down one path, turning the pages obsessively into scenes filled with humor, conflict, and silent yet tangible passion. But at the same time, you are led down another path you did not expect, as the true depth of the plot, its characters, and why they have all convened in the novel to tell their story is gently yet explosively revealed.

But all this would not be possible without the strength and realism of the characters themselves. Instantly, you fall in love with these very real people. Edwin and his unbridled love for others, with an honesty and empathy that flows over everyone around him; Erol and his meditative stare that taunts you with the depths underneath; and Zoë, with her striking independence of mind and strength of will, whose vulnerability reveals itself in flashes that endear you to her even more.

And Laverne does all of this with prose that is so humbled, patient, inspired, and poetic, and underlined with obvious passion and love for the characters, as to render the reader speechless. "Animus" is a book to be read over and over, and will stay with you forever.
